YOUTH SPEAKS 2023

The annual Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole - ‘Youth Speaks’ competition took place at Bournemouth School for Girls on 7th February 2023, organised by Poole Rotary Club together with the help of supporting clubs and individuals.

Teams of three pupils, comprising a chair person, a proposer and an opposer, speak in a 15 minute debate about their chosen topic.  Each competition is administered by an master of ceremonies, three judges, a questioner and a time keeper, from the participating clubs and friends of Rotary.

The teams were well balanced this year, with six teams from local schools in each competition (Intermediate & Senior).  Both competitions proceeded smoothly, went well and finished on time.

After a refreshment break, the audience for each event joined together for the announcement of results and presentation of prizes. The event was complete by 8.30pm.

This year, teams from Bournemouth School won the Intermediate competition and Twynham School the Senior competition with talks entitled, respectively:

  • “AI: the perfect future or technological torment?”, and

  • “Ethical consumption is an effective means of change”.

The two prize-winning teams now move on to the Rotary District Finals in Romsey on 4th March and we wish them every success.
